CAIO AND INBRASP SUPPORT NAURÚ SWIMMING PROJECT AND MAKE IT POSSIBLE SENDING ATHLETES TO THE 2024 PARIS SPECIAL OLYMPICS

2024-08-26 With a long history of support and sponsorship of actions and events benefiting the community, Caio and Inbrasp, entities of the Caio Group, take pride in sponsoring, through the Sports incentive Federal Law, Naurú Project swimming team, who qualified 17 athletes for the Paris Special Olympics, whose opening ceremony will be held on August 28.

“Our special athletes will be the flagship that will represent Brazil and the financial support, in addition to benefiting them, will also contribute to all Naurú sports centers spread across the country. These are people with thrilling and unique stories” says coach Antônio Luiz Cândido, the project’s swimming trainer.

Tânia Pires de Souza, Caio’s Communication and Marketing manager highlights the importance of the unity between the corporate world and social projects: “Participating in this positive chain, that seeks to encourage and provide visibility to special Olympics athletes, is very gratifying to companies. Partnerships such as these restore solidarity and transform lives”, she adds.

From Botucatu to Paris: a passion that moves

Of the total 17 special Olympics athletes in the Naurú team qualified for the 2024 Paris Special Olympics, three are from the Botucatu Center, one of the cities that is the home to entities of the Caio Group: Patrícia Santos, Cecília Araújo and Raquel Viel.

The special athletes from the Naurú Team have a winning history in Special Olympics, including Tokyo in 2021. Of the 24 athletes sent in 2021, eight brought medals back. Patrícia Santos won the Bronze in Tokyo in the 4x50 Freestyle Relay - 20 points, competing on S4 class (physical-motor disability), and she is planning to make history this year again. “This is my third time, and I have been through many adaptations, both in and out of the water. I’ve improved techniques and prepared myself psychologically. Now I feel more focused and ready to achieve some good results, partly due to the financial ease provided by companies such as Caio and Inbrasp, who embrace our project and boost our dream”, reports Patrícia.

Cecília Araújo, silver medal winner in S8 50 meters Freestyle, in 2021, also shares her emotional history with the modality. “Swimming came into my life in the form of rehabilitation, but it soon became my passion and my occupation. At the age of two I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, so, swimming first appeared as a form of treatment, and I stuck to it until today, at age 25. So, I am very proud to once again represent our nation through this wonderful sport”, she shares.

Raquel Viel, Naurú swimmer since 2009, affected by congenital visual impairment, tells us about the challenges she faced after her first appearance in the 2012 Special Olympics, in London: “Having qualified for the 2024 Special Olympics was a great victory and a surprise to me. After participating in the Rio de Janeiro edition, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, which required a surgery that left some after effects in my arm. I had to reinvent myself and, little by little, perfect my swimming. Although I’m not reaching the levels I used to reach before, I strive everyday to get back to them”.

The Naurú Project (brave, hero, warrior, fierce in Tupi Guarani), founded in 2010 by Special Olympics sprinter and multi-medal winner Verônica Hipólito, encompasses several sports modalities, including swimming, athletics, fencing, boccia and beach sports.

Activities are performed in different municipalities in the State of São Paulo, such as Botucatu, Indaiatuba, Caraguatatuba, Santo André and São Paulo, in addition to other Brazilian cities, such as Maringá (PR), São Bento do Sul (SC), Brasília (DF) and Marechal Deodoro (AL). With over 500 provided assistance, the project is used as means of social transformation, promoting the biopsychosocial development of everyone involved.
